Abstract. The paper is a survey on some of our recent results on the Lavrentiev phenomenon, namely the fact that the infimum of an integral functional on the set of Sobolev functions might be strictly less than the one taken on Lipschitz functions. Francis Clarke has not only inspired many of our methods and techniques, but has also given us the opportunity to meet and work together.
