Abstract. In this paper, we review the TSMC saga in three periods against the broader background: pre-TSMC, foundry emergence, and further disintegration. And we give brief accounts of how TSMC upgrades itself technologically and how global geopolitical structure evolves. We then present a series of analytical models to study the nature of the co-evolution of foundries and the fabless. Finally, some implications are drawn.
