Abstract. Constrained impact control problems with the minimization of the energy loss due to the induced drag are considered. The problem is formulated as a nonlinear optimal control problem with a known velocity profile. Since no analytical solution is available, we resort to a numerical parameter continuation procedure. To overcome the sensitivity of the numerical solution to the initial guess, we propose using a semi-analytical solution of an approximate control problem. To validate the optimality of the obtained solutions, an extension of known results on solution characterization in a constant-speed problem is proposed. The numerical simulations show that the proposed approach can generate optimal trajectories for a large set of practically important initial conditions.
